I've been wanting to make this journal and share this for a LONG time. This journal is going to show you everything I've done to Hilary Hyena over the years, from her initial design and story from September 2006 to the present Everything about how she was made.





September 2006 -- The discovery

It was the beginning of the school year; I had only arrived at this school at the beginning of the year and didnt have many friends.

A boy I had met during an Assembly just happened to be in my class. I recall one day, he was reading a Sonic the Hedgehog comic. I, at the time, had never known Sonic had his own comic.

I was also just plain uninterested.

Until he set it down on a page that had Scourge. Enter the fangasm. It was issue 161; I didnt read it but I knew the issue number because of the cover. From then on, I was obsessed with the green hedgehog.

Now, I'm not sure what praytell made me make a fancharacter in the first place; hell, I didnt even know they existed back then!

That night, I was watching The Lion King. It was then I began falling into an obsession with something else; hyenas. After watching the movie, I began looking up information on hyenas from various sources. I learned everything from their social structure to their bite power; needless to say, I was absolutely fasinated.

The name hit me like a sniper rifle; "Hilary Hyena."

It was cute. It was original. It was the beginning.

The first Hilary was somewhat an evil version of a Barbie doll stuck in a mutated Sally Acorns body.

Lacking spots everywhere but on her thighs, donning no clothing save for pink boots and a single pink glove, Hilary was somewhat a reflection of me; at the time, I was very much the "girly" girl; 99.9% of my closet was pink. But I digress.

This Hilary was a role model for all Mary-Sues. Why?

First of all, she was a pirate; no just any pirate. She was a pirate with a pink ship with a crew of tons of hot men. She had a dragon, two raptors, and a horse.

Oh yeah. Did I mention she had a Groundon and Mewtwo as pets as well? XD

I forgot to draw it, but she had a gun too.

This Hilary lasted until December of the same year



December 06 -- Sexier! OMGMILEYCYRUS! More originallyier! ...Wait. Who's that purple guy~?

I'd been doing alot of reasearch on Scourge; I wanted to make sure he and Hilary were compatable. I came across something that mentioned that Scourge was into "Hot Women" and I looked at a picture of Hilary I had lying about and I remember thinking -

"This sucks! Shes not sexy enough...I gotta change her..."

So I did.

The inspiration for Hilarys new design came from listening to my Miley Cyrus CD late at night.
....*cough* *cough* anyway. Somehow I drew the design you see above. I was SO proud. This was THE new Hilary. I was content and proud of her. She was no longer a pirate or anything; I hadn't thought that out yet.

Then I.."met" someone new.

Surfing the web, I came across a picture of Nack the weasel for the very first time EVER. Needless to say, I immediately fangirled and fell in love with the character. Now I was confused. Who should Hilary be with?!!

My innerfangirl for Nacky soon died and Scourge had me wrapped around his fictional pinky. I still remained a Nack fan, but mostly ignored him. But not completely.

So Hilary was to be with Scourge. My mind was made up.

This Hilary lasted aaaall the way until I joined dA in March 08.


Joining dA means changes had to be made.

Upon joining dA, I felt EXTREME pressure and was totally shy about Hilary. I made a really good friend here, ~jewmar, and I'm pretty sure I wouldve quit in the beginning if not for her support of Hilary.

For a while, I had not uploaded anything but MS paint works, for when I joined, I did not have a scanner. But I often told people about Hilary. ( I was an internet n00b.)

When I finally got my scanner, I couldnt find any of my Hilary pics and settled for one sketch I had done for X-mas.(This one! )

In that picture, I had altered Hilarys outfit and style and chose to keep her that way for fear of losing support upon showing the "real" Hilary.

The flat-haired, wanna-be anime bang-haired Hilary lasted up to July 2008

Evolution into todays Hilary

Hilary was beginning to get some attention, but I had a problem; for some reason, I just could no longer draw her. I hated everything I drew with her and for a long time, was unhappy with her design. Then I finally realised what was wrong.

She needed a new design. Something that I liked; afterall, whats the point of having a character if you dont even like her?

Redesigning her could hardly be considered "redesigining". Why?

At this time, I had started a Comic called Sonic Heroes 2, and it was set in the near future. So Hilary looked a bit different.

All I did was change the outfit and I kept everything else and the result ---

And that's the story of how Hilary came to be. She has no "abilities" other than her natural ability to crush bone easily with her teeth.

The reason I made this journal? For one I wanted to get rid of the previous one,and also...

I notice alot of people have trouble with making fancharacters and give up on them. I just wanted to show that creating a fancharacter takes time. Rome wasn't built in a day, and chances are, your fancharacter wont be either.
